The Three-Size Bra Fitting Room Plan

Compare three related sizes methodically to identify the best band, cup volume and bra shape.

Taking only one bra size into a fitting room can turn a simple fit problem into guesswork. A three-size plan gives you useful comparisons without carrying ten nearly identical bras.

Choose your centre size

Start with your current best estimate or the result from the Bra Size Calculator. Treat it as the centre of the test, not a verdict. For example, if your starting AU size is 14D, take that size first.

Add one sister size on each side

Add 12DD and 16C. These are sister sizes: the cup volume is broadly similar, while the band and cup lettering change together. Comparing them shows whether you need more band tension or more band room without making a large jump in cup capacity.

Keep the style constant

Compare all three sizes in the same bra model, colour and fabric where possible. Changing size and style at the same time makes it difficult to know what fixed the problem. Dark dyes, lace and seasonal fabric changes can sometimes make the same model feel slightly different, so a like-for-like comparison is valuable.

Test in a fixed order

  1. Fasten the band on the loosest hook.
  2. Position the cups at the breast root.
  3. Guide all tissue into the cups.
  4. Adjust straps only enough to keep them in place.
  5. Check the band, then the cups, then movement.

The band provides most of the structure, so assessing it before tightening the straps avoids masking an unsuitable band size.

Know when the three-size plan is not enough

If every size has the same wrinkle, pressure point or empty area, the issue is probably the shape or construction rather than the label. Try a different cup height, wire width, seam layout or fabric firmness. Our fit guide explains the main signs and likely next steps.

Record the result

Note the brand, model, labelled size and what worked. Sizing labels are not perfectly standard across brands, and an overseas label may use a different system. Use the site’s international conversion guidance when comparing AU, UK, US and EU labels.

Three deliberate comparisons usually teach you more than a pile of random sizes. Once you identify the best band, you can fine-tune the cup or change the bra shape with much less uncertainty.
